MEET RICHARD COOLEY:

Richard A. Cooley has proudly called Smiths Station home for over 60 years. A 1965 graduate of Smiths Station High School, Richard went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam. His lifelong commitment to service—both military and civic—has shaped his steady, principled leadership as Mayor of Smiths Station.

Following his military service, Richard earned degrees from both Auburn University and Troy University. He went on to dedicate more than 40 years to public education, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and eventually Superintendent. His career in education was marked by integrity, innovation, and a deep belief in the power of investing in young people.

Richard was one of the early leaders of the movement to incorporate the City of Smiths Station and has served on the City Council since 2004. He was appointed Mayor in late 2023 and has worked tirelessly to build a safer, stronger, and more connected community.

Under his leadership, the city has seen:
   •    The groundbreaking of a 500+ capacity Community Storm Shelter
   •    Road improvement and paving projects across key neighborhoods
   •    Expansion of the city’s Sports Complex and green spaces
   •    New economic development, including small business growth
   •    Stronger partnerships with Ft. Benning through Intergovernmental Support Agreements
   •    Increased pursuit of state and federal funding through partnerships with grant professionals

Richard also serves as President of the Tan Son Nhut Association, a national organization for Vietnam War veterans who served at the Tan Son Nhut Air Base. His leadership there reflects his ongoing commitment to fellow veterans and to honoring military service.

As Mayor, Richard Cooley believes in transparent governance, steady progress, and community collaboration. He is proud to serve the citizens of Smiths Station and is dedicated to ensuring that the city remains a place where families thrive, businesses grow, and neighbors care for one another.
